@wulfgol bad boy bubby Aussie film, best scene when he joins the punk band. 🤣

wulfgold

May 20, 2025 19:37

@rufflles: probably the dinner with parents scene for me

Midnight Ruffles

May 20, 2025 23:49

@wulfgold haven't seen it in about 20yrs. I think I need to revisit it. Man now I feel old, saying stuff like that. Haha

This is such a niche question. I really need time to think about it. Alternative ( arthouse, indie) but unappealing to most. Good question Op. 🤔

Bad boy bubby is on tubi.tv

I think I'm going to watch it rn.

ima gonna say The Empire of Corpses, it’s an anime movie but about corpses and death
i’m not sure if it’s considered alternative
but i know half the population probably doesn’t like anime, or doesn’t like corpses and death 🤷🏼‍♀️

I think that literally describes 80 percent of what the public likes.

Bad Boy Bubby... well, that was a movie.

May 21, 2025 03:29

emperorroberto

May 21, 2025 03:30

Idk about it being a good film?

wulfgold

May 22, 2025 08:54

@ Dr. Sus what did you think?
It's a wild ride, it's probably my favourite film ever - Bub's not a bad guy, he's just learning about the world.

@ emperorroberto Gummo, by Harmonie? Korine - his movies are a mixed bag.

The Wanderers was a good movie

Midnight Ruffles

Hmmm it's not really alt, but I don't think many could watch a movie without feeling uncomfortable or possibly triggered, especially women, its called, the killer inside me.

Midnight Ruffles

May 22, 2025 13:53

Another movie called basket head, some might find unappealing.

Midnight Ruffles

May 22, 2025 13:55

Lol I mean basket case

emperorroberto

May 22, 2025 15:57

Bascket case,a little but it really seemed more goofy.

Midnight Ruffles

May 22, 2025 16:01

Emperor do you remember the ending with the girlfriend? Possible spoiler alert. Yeah it's goofy, but that scene is a bit disturbing. I thought it was. Lol also op said "unappealing or offensive." I don't think everyone would find this movie appealing.

A danish movie I watched was called the idiots, based on Fyodor Dostoevsky's novel. I could see how that could be unappealing, & offensive to some.

Another movie called "the square" which I think was a Swedish film, the dinner party scene, is interesting.

Dr. Sus

May 22, 2025 19:41

At Roberto, spaghetti tub movie is called, Gummo. Made by the director of Kids. I'm blanking on his unique name rn, and coincidentally enough I thought Bad Boy Bubby had a similar feel to that. I'll report back more on what I thought of that.

Dr. Sus

May 22, 2025 20:18

I overall liked Bad Boy Bubby. Which can be watched on the free (and legal) streaming service tubi.tv

Warning, contains some small SPOILERS, except for the ending, I'm vague about that.

Another warning, this film isn't for the faint of heart or sensitive. But I suggest those who can handle macabre topics watch it.

As I said, while watching it I thought, "This has a 'Gummo' feel." I really liked how the beginning, like first twenty minutes relied mostly on visual. Which is what I was taught in film school, it's a visual medium, tell your story visually. Throughout the second act I started wondering, "Is this just made by someone who has no idea how to make a film?" I especially thought that during the end of the jail scene, "This is just weird for the sake of being weird." But having seen the rest, I don't think that it is.

If it hadn't had the third act that it did, I don't think I would've liked the film. The third act is amazing. I found it really creative how Bubby almost only says dialog he heard someone else say, so to make a cohesive, and entertaining story that way must've bene a challenge, especially since he almost always, or always says the LAST dialog he heard from another character, to whoever the next character he sees. I was surprised by how well he fit into the band, and thought, "This would've totally worked in the 90's." It's filled with themes and meaning, but I wasn't trying too hard to pay attention to that stuff, rather just enjoy the film. One that I will mention is child reering. I'd be really curious to see what the writer and/or directors process were during the making and writing of this work. This is truly some arthouse s**t, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I wasnt planning on writing all this, and there's more I could say but if you're not sensitive I suggest you just go watch it for yourself.

Midnight Ruffles

May 22, 2025 20:19

Correction the idiots is not Dostoevsky's. I'm getting muddled with another film.

Also I realised you said best film, op. I'm not giving the best, just films that I've seen that I think others might find hard or uncomfortable to watch.

I need to shut up. 🤐

I saw Gummo like once or twice and I was on Robotussin.I just found it disturbing what I rememered.Basket Case,I don't remember what happened w the girlfriend?I remember him being hung outside.

Dr Sus , nice analysis, the film is well done, & very creative, it's definitely one that stays with you. It is a good film.

I'm wondering if you'll enjoy some other Aussie films Dr Sus, try a movie called Malcolm, totally different genre, it's lite & fun. Very 80s Melbourne.

I think wulfgold is on the money.
I wish I could think of some, right now, but I can't. I can think of ones people might find disturbing or unappealing, in parts, but not the best of. Have you seen midsommar? That was different to me, & somewhat disturbing. Sorry don't think I'll do better than bad boy bubby. Lol

Dr. Sus

May 23, 2025 05:00

I'll check it out if I can find it, anf thank you on the analysis! I did a lot of that in school, I was pretty good at it. I remember getting an A + on s paper by a ball buster of a teacher, also I was high and drunk when I wrote it. I was dreading it so I got super f**ked up first.

Dr. Sus

May 23, 2025 05:05

Oh, and I agree about Bubby not being a bad person, he was most certainly a product if his environment. I felt like his demeanor with the cat he meets in the street show who he is as a person. In regards to everything else, I don't think he knows any better. I like his character arc. The 3rd act (which is really the 4th) really sold me on the whole film. If I find it in a used store, I'll most certainly buy it. Maybe new too, but I bet it's a pricey flick, it seems too obscure to be cheap brand new though.

wulfgold

May 23, 2025 22:27

Also, BBB reminds me of the Dogme 95 film 'Festen.' yeah totally get that.

So, trying to stay out of direct spoilers - it did take the director years to make and each major scene/setting had a different Director of Photography + all the audio in it comes from two small mics, one behind each of Bub's ears - all the audio is from his perspective + I think (guess work) that explains the disorientation of the prison scene.
Yeah, that acts are infancy/childhood/adulthood, he's experiencing the world, learning to deal with it and become a proper person and not just someone parroting the world. It's revolting at this, but there's a lot of redemption in there, his relationship with Rachel (the heavily disabled lady) is heartbreaking.
There's a Criterion release from quite a while back (I think) so I doubt it's cheap, but Tubi's available (free/legit) internationally.
Yeah, my absolute favourite film ever and I sob like a bitch at points, but I laugh my ass off at others.
* I think the cops put him in the cell with that other guy as a punishment because they were d**ks.

Stacks of great Aussie films - Wake In Fright, The Mule, Down Under and possibly my favourite romcom (lol) Little Deaths.
I'm not even Aussie, but if you fancy something with a bit of a Sopranos vibe try Mr. Inbetween - I think its on FX + short episodes.
