Claim to fame/shame

Claim to fame/shame

What is your state, district, shire, prefecture, etc's claim to fame? Or claim to shame? Be random things people don't know, weird, obscure, hilarious stuff. Not the typical stuff everyone knows.

Washington state (home state)

Fame: notoriously bad sports teams. Mariners, Seahawks... But we support them regardless because we're loyal. Our only two known rap artists are both known for incredibly stupid songs. We also pooped out a ton of grunge bands (Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Sound Garden...) because we love angst and flannel!

Shame: Onision is from there, and also f**king Ocean Gate (i.e. imploded Titanic submersible company). We are where Twilight takes place so .... Sparkly vampires. Ever heard of Starbucks? Mid over-priced coffee taking over the world like herpes and putting our smaller better cafes? Yeah, sorry, our bad

My home town: The Rock went to the same middle school I went to in 1989. Ernest Borgnine was born and lived in town in the early 1920-1970s. Fatman Scoop just died on stage in my home town last year, thank god I was not there.

My home town was the home to the Mosley family, strangely the family who built most of the village has veery little named after him due to his sons connection to Hitler, as they had the same Christian name. Oswald Mosley.

My hometown is Littleton, Colorado, known only for kicking off the school shooting craze by being the site of the Columbine High School massacre on April 20, 1999. I grew up less than a mile from Columbine.

It’s not the only Denver suburb with a heinous massacre to its name though. In Aurora on July 20, 2012 during a showing of The Dark Knight Rises, James Holmes killed 12 people and injured dozens more in a movie theater.

In Boulder, Colorado just a little northwest of Denver on March 22, 2021 a guy killed 10 people in a shooting inside a King Soopers grocery store.

Colorado Springs 50 miles to the south has had a bunch of shootings too, one at New Life Church, one at a Planned Parenthood, and another at a gay nightclub.

I guess what I’m saying is that Colorado has a weird claim to shame when it comes to mass killings.

My entire country is a cesspool of people whose debauchery and debasement of the English language deserve punishment by fire and sword.

A simple word like "ask" becomes "aks" so not even the old English f**k-up of "aks" but "aksk"
Words like "twenty" lose a "t" and become tweny."
"Butter" the t's become d's and you have "budder" water suffers a similar fate.
An "s" before a "c" gains an "x" for no reason: "escape " becomes "ex-scape."

In the newest wave of this degradation (a word most of them are unlikely to know), they have begun dropping words from sentences. Instead of "let's go to the shopping mall," you have "let's go mall."

This is a country where Shakespeare had to be dropped from the school curriculum because it was "too hard."

They think themselves friendly or endearing by suggesting a familiar association (most presumptuous)... the hideousness of the suggestion that I could be their "bro," as they call each other, and attempt to address me is repugnant, to say the least.

One would think such transgressions would be limited to the dregs and waifs of society, but you'd be wrong. Anyone younger than Gen X and middle class or below, even a good part of Gen X , has succumbed or is likely to succumb to this pestilence of dumbing down, as they infuse their vocabulary with ghetto slang and pop culture terms from Americanization , alongside the laziness of pronunciation and lack of competence in completing entire sentences.

But in a country where the last government gave prisoners voting rights, what can you expect ?

Even the countercultures here are infected; they do not push against the mainstream but accept it and even ape its behaviors .
Though this I will blame more on the push of subcultures , which are by their very nature exclusive, to become inclusive and to abandon any kind of internal education program or gatekeeping, which otherwise retained some semblance of quality control .

Is New Zealand English really like that? 😵

Someone sounds like a racist asshole.

I should note that trained linguists have conclusively shown that dialects of English like the one you describe are completely legitimate and operate by an internally consistent set of rules just like the dialect you use. John McWhorter has a book about African American Vernacular English, for instance, that might be instructive here.

Someone needs to look up the definition of racism given that this country is a multicultural society and nothing above references race or ethnicity.
