What’s your favorite new (or “new to you”) band discovery of 2025?

Mine is definitely Cheekface and their earnest Talking Heads vibe.

I don't like cheekface due to their rampant bombing of the middle east 2 days a week

I really wish they had decided to read or write in Cantonese instead.

I let Spotify take stuff I was listening to, then play recommended stuff based on that, I liked some stuff from that, and got more recommendations based on those likes. Eventually it landed on "Altay" by Ummet Ozcan and Otyken. And I really like that one. It's very catchy.

Deradoorian's "Ready For Heaven" album. It got released earlier this year; sounds a bit like Laurie Anderson, Talking Heads, Lizzy Mercier Descloux, Bauhaus and Cabaret Voltaire got in a room and jammed together... A really nice surprise and discovery.

Otherwise, I discovered A Place To Bury Strangers earlier this year and was blown away. If you like NIN, Soft Moon, My Bloody Valentine and Sunn O)) you might like them too ! They play LOUD when performing.

DJ Shortee, but she's also a producer, along with her husband, Faust. Partially because her, her husband, and a gal pal of hers all make bangin' tunes, and they're part of a free Scratch sample pack. Between that and her free content training lessons online helped me progress with scratching, which I never used to do, but I can/could mix like a motherf**ker. Plus, she's taken the time to watch videos I've made of my progress and talk to me about them online. She's cool af.

And DJ Qbert gave out hundreds of free beats. I already knew about DJQbert and had the pleasure of seeing him live, but giving out roughly 350-400 beats to scratch to, for FREE, is cool af in my book. The same 10 beats from DJ Shortee were getting old after 3 months.
