Southwest US

I used to live in Arizona down by the US/Mexican International boundary, loved the high desert and the towns of Mexico just south of the US. I compiled an extensive Spanish music catalogue living down there and went south for the romanticism of the area. I play my Spanish mixes and I want to go back and walk the streets, while catching a buzz on Tequila.

I also started liking Country music, which I NEVER thought I would, ever.

Mexico scares me. All that cartel stuff is horrifying. Only place in Mexico I’ve ever been is the colonias just outside of Juarez, basically the poorest place you can possibly imagine.

Juarez is bad ass. The towns south of Arizona are/were a lot more lowkey. One had to be alert but, if you didn't runaround screaming Spanish expletives, you would be alright.

It wasn't like going to Canada, you felt like you were in a very different country which was cool.

UK country music is very different, it's mainly a bunch of farmers playing the fiddle and talking like pirates.

That honestly sounds pretty based. US country music is largely people talking about trucks, getting drunk, s*x, hunting, etc.

UK country must be an awesome night to have drinks and just smile all night.

I love traditional music from all over the place, but I have the best broad understanding of the local stuff.

English folk music isn't as well appreciated outside a few fringe instances;
Everybody falls in love with Sandy Denny's voice for instance; Fairport Convention were at the crest
of the English neo-folk thing
But I think there's a lot of neglected romantic and supernatural ballads too
Such as this one from an album I love;

Scots Folk music is brilliant; I hold The Corries in great esteem
considering mostly they sing ancient lays about killing the English
Lovely duo these boys; This is a condemned criminal's lament

Irish Folk music is harder to nail down because it's rather more alive in the present
It's remained "culturally relevant" in a way that most of the other forms haven't
and has often been an avenue for political statements even in recent times.
My experience in general is that the Irish are quite capable of casual musical athleticism
I'm proud to have been taught by an Irishman.
Take this old feller and young man, beautiful;

The Welsh are most known for singing, and they're great at it.
They also have I think, playful musical sensibilities.
Another lot of musical Celts you might well say, but
really now, this is one that wrings a tear from my eye;

This has been I feel, a brief cross-section of "Folk Music of the British Isles".
Now concluded.

Bums, just googled Robin Williamson and it turns out he's a Scot.
So I should do some digging on Welsh material.
No refunds!
