Can't sleep

Can't sleep

I have had insomnia since I was a young child. My folks used to find me sat on the stairs late at night instead of tucked up in bed. I'd peeked through the living room doorway to see bits of horror movies like handyman, hellraiser and nightmare on elm street (thank God I didn't witness anything truly scary like a romantic comedy).

Anyway I finally got it sorted by getting a job that tires me out both physically and mentally. In a good way though. I also developed a fab routine (thanks OCD your helpful for once). It's = Get kids in bed for same time every night and do that whole routine. Then get into a very hot bath with vanilla scented candles. Dive into bed listen to a particular YouTube video of rain falling on crashing waves. Bed covers are the perfect texture.

It was working amazing but then the six weeks summer holidays started (I work as a TA for SEND children at a primary school) and I have been off work. Routine is well and truly screwed! I've tried doing lots of things with my kids like beech days out, swimming, walking, zoo visit, holiday and NOTHING is tiring me out. I'm exhausted but I can't sleep.
I go back to work next Wednesday and I'm worried I'm going to be so physically exhausted by six weeks of falling asleep at 3 or 4 am then waking up at 7 or 8 am ... so exhausted that I'm going to crash out.

Its the last week of the holidays and I'm trying to settle the routine back to normal to try to get some rest but I still can't SLEEP.

Does anyone else suffer like this? Do you have any advice?

I always had sleep problems, but the solution differs for everyone

I just ignore sleep routines, and only go to bed when my mind feels tired

Then I only have to face the issue of fat cats sleeping on my chest to disturb my sleep

Personally, I take 30mg Buspar for anxiety, 50mg tramadol for sleep and nightmares, and maybe 1mg melatonin if it's really bad.

I've always had sleep issues, but I also have PTSD which makes actually being asleep suck too and rarely restful.

I make sure to lift weights an hour or so most days of the week, so that physically tires me out. Mentally, my work does as I work as an engineer for a telecom/ISP provider. I frequently have to solve complex problems people send me that they can't figure out, or automate out everything from deploying new code, to configuring systems and hardware, to provisioning infrastructure.

By the end of the day, I'm pretty shot.

During times like these, I'd probably recommend getting into a physically active hobby and reading a complex book, working on a puzzle, designing and building something, etc.

Should help you feel mentally and physically exhausted enough. If all else fails though, try talking to your pcp about hydroxyzine. 50-100mg is standard for insomnia and even manages to knock me out cold.
