Origins as Groundswell (1992–1997)
Before they were Three Days Grace, the founding members—Adam Gontier, Neil Sanderson, and Brad Walst—started a grunge band called Groundswell in Norwood, Ontario. After a brief breakup, they reformed in 1997 as a trio under their current name.
Mainstream Breakthrough (2003–2006)
The band moved to Toronto and released their self-titled debut album, Three Days Grace (2003). It was an instant success, fueled by the angst-ridden anthem "I Hate Everything About You."
They reached even greater heights with One-X (2006). Written while Gontier was in rehab for health issues, the album became a masterpiece of the genre, featuring legendary tracks like:
•"Animal I Have Become"
•"Never Too Late"
•"Pain"
Continued Success (2009–2012)
The band expanded their sound with Life Starts Now (2009) and Transit of Venus (2012). During this period, they became one of the most played bands on rock radio, consistently topping the Billboard Mainstream Rock charts.
The Lineup Change (2013–2024)
In early 2013, Adam Gontier unexpectedly resigned from the band due to health concerns and a desire to evolve. The band recruited Brad Walst’s brother, Matt Walst (formerly of My Darkest Days), as the new lead singer.
Under the new lineup, they have released three albums:
•Human (2015)
•Outsider (2018)
•Explosions (2022)
Matt’s era proved the band’s longevity, as they continued to break records for the most No. 1 singles on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart.
The Great Reunion (2024)
After years of speculation and a few surprise guest appearances by Adam at 3DG shows in 2023, the band officially announced the return of Adam Gontier in October 2024. In a unique move, the band confirmed they would move forward with two lead vocalists—both Adam Gontier and Matt Walst—sharing the stage and the studio.
"Alienation" (2025)
This culminated in the release of their highly anticipated eighth studio album, "Alienation", in early 2025. It marked the first time both singers featured on a full-length record together.
Sound: The album blends the raw, emotional grit of the "One-X" era with the modern, aggressive production of their more recent work.
Key Themes: Much like the title suggests, the lyrics explore feelings of isolation in a digital age and the process of reconciling with the past.
Reception: Fans and critics praised the vocal dynamic between Gontier and Walst, particularly on the lead single which showcased their contrasting styles.
Legacy & Current situation
With Adam’s return and Matt staying on board, Three Days Grace has entered a "powerhouse" phase, cementing their status as icons of alternative metal. They now hold the record for the most #1 singles in the history of the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart.
Musical Characteristics
Three Days Grace is defined by its hard-hitting, rhythmic riffs and raw, emotional lyrics. While Gontier’s era was known for its gritty, baritone intensity, Matt Walst brought a higher-energy, modern rock vocal style that kept the band relevant to a new generation.
Current Lineup: Adam Gontier (Vocals), Matt Walst (Vocals), Barry Stock (Lead Guitar), Brad Walst (Bass), and Neil Sanderson (Drums).
