Grew up in an environment where the arts were often encouraged, but truly seen as a second rate form of existence to actually pursue.
I am a filmmaker, musician and visual arts educator. I like people who ask questions and question conventional ways of being.
I think small talk is only useful for the short term. In some countries it’s actually less common and shows thoughtlessness.
So much about the culture I grew up in is about self preservation, to such an extent that to be sincere is an act often met with suspicion and even resentment. I reject this, at great social cost.
