NYC's Lunachicks are the bomb that dropped on everyone in the 80s starting with Babysitters on Acid then going on tour with The Obsessed & lots of others, doing Lollapalooza and more festivals in the 90s. Never broke up, but just took a long break after 2001, then regrouped in 2002, 2004 and as of 2019 have been playing live again a lot.
Not really a Riot Grrl band or punk, they have elements of all that with a lot of humor. It's easy to tell they dig the Ramones & MC5 as well as NY CBGB staple bands. The very tall Theo Kogan is their striking singer who sometimes takes acting jobs & does modeling, tattooist Squid (Sydney Silver) is bassist & sometimes vocalist while Gina Volpe is their Ace Frehley inspired guitarist. They change drummers a lot.
Their fans include Sonic Youth, the Olsen twins & The Dictators. They've actually played with The Ramones, DEVO & The GoGos.
Some film appearances for them are High Times PotLuck, which has some nice live performances, and also Not Bad For A Girl, a documentary highlighting women in rock.
They actually began as a quintet with Sindi Benezra playing guitar with Gina on their 1st 2 albums. Sindi now plays for Corporate Plants & has her own punk radio show.
